ACCORDING to his family, there was nothing more Frank Houghton loved than a good old skit.
This is probably best illustrated by the time he went to the dentist and his own words asked for: “A top set of yellow-coloured teeth with a gap big enough to fit a two pence piece in the middle.”
Or at Christmas time when he would open up all of his children’s selection boxes and eat all of the Spangles telling them ‘that they very were dangerous and they could choke on them’ even up until their teenage years.
But the larger than life chef not only had a passion for food, he took great pride in looking after his hair.
From afro perms to long perms, Frank thought he looked like Steve McQueen and would use Cossack hairspray to keep his curls in place. He even surprised daughter Clare on her wedding day with a massive perm using Cossack.
But the joker had a softer side and was a loving husband, caring father and devoted grandfather.
This week Frank would have been celebrating his 60th birthday and later this month he would have been taking grandson Charlie to New York for his 13th birthday. Staying true to this promise, Frank’s daughter Emma and husband Andrew fly out to the Big Apple with Charlie on December 28 in memory of Frank.
It was after first hearing the Frank Sinatra classic; New York, New York, that he dreamed of going there and during the last years of his life he would go every Christmas to buy presents for all the family.
He even met American actress Whoopi Goldberg on one of his many visits there.
Frank lived his life to the full and he loved walking.
Sadly 20 years ago he got was knocked over by two cars on Sheil Road whilst walking his niece to the bus stop. Both of his legs were smashed to pieces and he was rushed to the Royal Hospital.
Doctors said that he would never walk again but Frank bounced back. Even 12 years on after the accident, Frank lost one of his leg’s due to the accident, but Frank battled on and was a real fighter.
With a heart of gold, he would have give anyone his last penny, even if he had to borrow money off someone else to lend it and would do buffets for friends and family members. Nothing was too much trouble for Frank.
After a massive heart attack he had a triple by-pass at Broadgreen Hospital. The operation was successful and Frank said he felt ‘21 years younger’.
Despite doctors telling him to give up smoking, Frank continued to smoke and had smoked throughout his life.
After years of battling on, Frank suffered another heart attack and passed away at home with his family. His memory will never be forgotten.
